Reproductions of four published titles relating to overland journeys to California and Oregon in the 1840s and 1850s, bound together in leather with gold spine lettering. The last title has inserted a reproduction of an obituary hand-dated Oct. 15, 1936, and several photographs mounted on plain paper.

Harriet Nesmith McArthur may have been a relative of James Willis Nesmith and his sister Georgia Nesmith. James Willis Nesmith was the second US Senator elected from Oregon, serving 1861 -1867. He was also elected to the US Congress in 1873 and served until 1875. He served both houses of the legislature as a Democrat. Bidwell was a noted early Calif. pioneer, landowner, and statesman. He helped form the Western Immigration Society in 1840, which led to the formation of the Bidwell-Bartleson wagon train, the first emigrant train to Calif. He travelled through Utah in 1841, then forged the Calif. immigrant trail. In 1846 he wrote the Bear Flag platform.
